Three Reasons Why You Should Rent a Roll Off Dumpster for Re-roofing

You Need A place to Dispose of Old Shingles

The old shingles you take off your roof won’t be picked up by your local waste disposal services. You can’t leave a pile of broken shingles sitting in your yard. Shingles torn off a roof may have nails in them and pose a danger to neighborhood children. Burying shingles is not viable because they pose a threat to groundwater, and it would be against local environmental laws in many locations. Renting a roll-off dumpster is the only option you have to dispose of your old roof shingles safely.

Roll Off Rental Dumpsters Makes Cleanup Easier

When you have a roll-off dumpster placed below your roof on your driveway, you are enabling your contractor to contain the debris from the re-roofing job. Everything will be neatly contained in the dumpster as opposed to it being strewn across your yard. If you don’t want to spend hours picking up shingles and nails, then rent a dumpster.

You Don’t Have to Haul the Debris Away

One of the biggest reasons you should rent a roll-off dumpster is that you don’t have to load up a vehicle and haul the debris away. People who don’t rent a dumpster for their re-roofing project have to find a way to haul the waste to landfill themselves. With a roll-off dumpster when the job is finished, the dumpster is picked up for you and taken away. It is as simple as that; you don’t have to worry about disposal.

How to Tell What Size Roll-Off Dumpster You Will Need

You may be intimidated by figuring out how many shingles will be going into your rental dumpster. It is actually an easier process than you would think.  A roofing contractor will know right away how many shingles will be needed to re-shingle your roof. Once the contractor has examined the roof, ask how many shingles are going to be required. Shingles come in a bundle, and your roofer will tell you how many bundles it will take to fix your roof. Each type of shingle in a bundle will have a range of weight.

  • Standard Shingles- 50 to 80 pounds per bundle.
  • Architectural Shingles- 65 to 80 pounds per bundle.
  • Three Tab Shingles- 50 to 65 pounds per bundle.

(Weight of a bundle) x (total bundles needed) x (number of layers) = shingle weight.

Its harder to determine the weight of the debris that comes off of your roof such as old nails, tar paper, and rotten wood. Ask your roof contractor to give you an estimate and combine that with the total weight of the shingles to find out what dumpster has the weight capacity you need. In most cases, it will be a 20-yard or 30-yard dumpster that you need.
