How to Properly Dispose of Live Your Christmas Tree

Another Christmas has come and gone, and we are in the midsts of a new decade and possibly a war, but you still have that Christmas tree sitting in your living room. It’s not going to get greener, and the longer you wait, the more needles you will have to sweep or vacuum up from the floor.

If this is your first live Christmas tree to dispose of than it is really a simple process, but you should be aware of a few things and were happy to help you make your Christmas tree disposal process easy peasy lemon squeezie.

Inspect the Tree.

The first thing you should do before removing a Christmas tree from your home is to be sure all of your ornaments are off of the tree. It’s easy to miss an ornament or two when you are taking them off the tree. Use a flashlight to be sure that inside of the tree’s limbs is sufficiently lit. You don’t want to leave the ornament your aunt sally owned as a child on the tree when you throw it out. You may find upon inspection that there are lights you missed on the tree as well. This mistake often happens because the wires on tree lights are often the same shade of green as your Christmas tree. Once you are sure everything is off your tree, you will be ready to remove it.

Clear a Path.

Clearing a path may seem like a common sense thing to do, but many people miss this step. Since you brought your Christmas tree into the house, there may have been some changes, such as receiving new furniture as a gift which is now squarely in the path between your tree and the front door. Simply clear a way, making sure to remove anything along the path that could be knocked off a table and be broken. That crystal vase you got as a gift will shatter into a thousand pieces if the limbs of your Douglas fir brush it off the table like a street sweeper. Of course, remove anything you could trip over and be aware of steps and uneven surfaces along the way. If your path is particularly fraught with hazards, you will need to assign one person to act as a guide as you and anyone who may be helping you remove the tree from your home.

Preparing Your Tree for Disposal.

Where you live, and the rules for trash pickup will determine how you should dispose of your Christmas tree. If you live in somewhere such as an apartment complex or condominium, there may be an assigned dumpster where you can throw your tree away. If they don’t have an assigned dumpster, don’t throw it into the complex’s dumpster, but leave it next to it. Many dumpsters in apartment or condominium communities have trash compactors in the dumpsters which cannot handle something the size and rigidity of a Christmas tree. If you live in a residential area, it depends on your trash pickup service. Some services may want you to cut the tree into separate sections for it to be thrown away in your trash can. Some trash pickup services may want the tree to be wrapped in a plastic bag when it is picked up, and others may be fine with you leaving it by the curb without any preparation. If the latter is true, doing a second check for missed ornaments in the sunlight often yields positive results.
