Reasons Why You Should Do A Spring Clean out

As the spring season dawns on us its time to start thinking about getting rid of the stuff you accrued during the long gray months. There are many reasons why you should do a spring clean out. Among the reasons are more space in your home, freeing up storage space for the important things that you actually do want to keep. And the peace of mind that comes from being clutter-free. So, with that in mind, here are some things that you should think about getting rid of this spring.

The Old Stuff in Your Medicine Cabinet.

When it comes to things that you don’t want to hold on to, expired items in your medicine cabinet should be at the top of the list. Old prescriptions and over the counter are ineffective, but can still be dangerous if ingested by a child or mistake. As a rule, keeping old medication is a bad idea any time of the year, but spring is an ideal time to get rid of it. That tube of toothpaste that has been sitting in the cabinet needs to be thrown out as well.

The Rags and Boxes in the Garage.

Old rags that have been used in cleaning an engine or hands that have oil or gas on them can become a fire hazard when piled up together. The accelerant in the rags can ignite and quickly become a raging fire. Another issue with old rags is that they can emit noxious fumes from chemicals on them which can make you ill. Old wet rags can become veritable mold farms sending dangerous spores into the air that can cause lung infections and be even more hazardous for allergy and asthma suffers.

That pile of cardboard boxes acquired from all the Amazon deliveries over the winter pose a threat as well. Cardboard boxes make excellent kindling in a fire and can easily hasten the spread of flames. There is absolutely no reason to store cardboard boxes; plastic storage containers are far more effective in protecting stored items and don’t easily ignite. Throwing out those old cardboard boxes not only frees up space but makes your home safer.

Your Damaged Furniture and Exercise Equipment.

Old furniture with springs exposed is not only uncomfortable but unsightly as well. Getting rid of your late uncle Bob’s recliner won’t damage his memory. The only reason he kept it was that he was 97 years old and didn’t have the energy to get a new one.  That wobbly ding room table with all the scratches on it really should be replaced; there is no sense in keeping it or any unneeded furniture.

Old exercise equipment can be just as dangerous. You don’t want you weight lifting bench to break while you are holding weights over your head. An old broken Stairmaster or NordicTrack has injured more than one person.
