How do I Undertake a Housefire Cleanout?

Having your house catch on fire is one of the worst experiences a person can have. Nothing is spared in a fire, not furniture, clothes, family pictures, or the house itself. If you have experienced a house fire, this will not be a post about what fire safety precautions you should have taken; you are well aware of that. This post will be undertaking a housefire cleanout and what kind of dumpster you will require. We understand how emotionally jarring losing your home can be; even if it’s salvageable, you probably have lost much of what you own. So, with that in mind, let’s look at undertaking a housefire cleanout.

What Size Dumpster Will I Need?

When choosing a dumpster, a roll off dumpster is preferable to other types. With a roll-off dumpster, we will deliver it to your driveway, and after you have filled it, we will pick it up and haul your rental roll-off dumpster to the local landfill near you.

Dumpster size is going to be linked to the size of your house. For most homes, a thirty-yard roll-off dumpster will be adequate to hold all of the burned contents of your home. If your home has to be demolished, you may need a forty-yard dumpster in order to hold demolition debris and junk. Be sure that the area where the roll-off dumpster will be placed is free of low hanging limbs or powerlines. If that is not the case, we can place the roll-off dumpster in an alternative location.

How Do I Undertake a Housefire Cleanout?

You may want to get started right away, cleaning out the burned items from your home. As previously stated, the first step is to order your roll-off dumpster, but you need to wait until both the fire inspector and an insurance inspector (if you had insurance) need to examine your home to determine what started the fire. The inspection process may take a few days, but we will have your roll-off dumpster waiting so you can get started once the inspections are complete.

Safety needs to be your first priority; you will need protective eyewear, and depending on the stability of your home’s structure, a hard hat. Thick work gloves are another good idea when picking up broken glass or loose nails. Start by removing anything that poses a hazard to you and those cleaning out your home. Exposed nails, windows with knife-like shards of glass, slip hazards such as loose plaster or debris. Once you have ensured it’s safe to enter your burned-out house, clear a path to remove the large items. Get rid of all debris and junk that could cause someone to trip or impede the removal of furniture and appliances.

Be aware that there are prohibited items that cannot be disposed of in your roll-off dumpster.  Here are the items you cannot dispose of in your roll-off dumpster.

  • Tires
  • Batteries
  • Stumps
  • Paint and Lacquers
  • Oil
  • Asbestos
  • Hazardous Chemical and Biological Waste
  • Ink and Resin
  • TVs and Computers.

This list leaves everything else that has burned. A local scrap dealer may pick up the items that cannot be disposed of; check with them about what items they will take.
