How to Dispose of Your Kitchen Cabinets in a Roll-Off Dumpster

It’s the time of year people begin to think about remodeling their kitchen ahead of the holidays. If you are one of those people, you are probably going to replace your kitchen cabinets. Replacing cabinets is a great way to improve both the looks and functionality of your kitchen. If you are planning to do it yourself, you need to be aware of how to dispose of your kitchen cabinets in a roll-off dumpster.

What You Will Need to Dispose of Your Kitchen Cabinets

Before you can take down your cabinets and dispose of them, you will need to rent a roll-off dumpster from Dumpstermaxx. We will deliver a roll-off dumpster directly to your driveway at a time of your choosing. When you have filled the dumpster with your old cabinets, we will pick it up and haul it away. In most cases, only a ten-yard dumpster will be enough for your old kitchen cabinets, but if you have an unusually large kitchen, you should use a twenty-yard dumpster.

Once you have placed an order for a dumpster, you will need the right tools. Here is a brief list of the tools most commonly used to remove kitchen cabinets:

  • Hammers
  • Pry Bar or Crow Bar
  • Utility Knife
  • Drill
  • Screwdrivers
  • Wrench
  • Measuring Tape
  • Reciprocating Saw
  • 2×4 Boards
  • Tarps or Plastic Sheets
  • Step Ladders
  • Safety Goggles
  • Work Gloves

Be sure the power and water are shut off in your kitchen in case you strike wires or pipes. Be sure to cover counters and move furniture out of the room.

The Process of Taking Down and Disposing of Your Kitchen Cabinets

When you have the area prepared, take apart any fixtures, trims, and seals. Next, unscrew the doors from the main cabinet body so that the hinges remain on the door. Then, remove the shelves and drawers while leaving the brackets, unless their removal is necessary.

Next, take out the pieces of wood framing connecting the cabinets to the floor or wall. Use a utility knife to remove caulk from the cabinet, wall, counter, or other surfaces. Finally, use a hammer to wedge a pry bar behind the trim and pull it away.

Next, it’s time for the more strenuous work. Begin by preparing your supports. Measure the distance between the countertops and underneath the overhead cabinets. Once you have measured, cut your support 2x4s into four pieces at the same length as the distance from the countertop to the bottom of the overhead cabinet. Place the supports under the corner of each cabinet. If the cabinets are heavy, you may need assistance to keep them from falling as you position the supports.

Inspect where the cabinets connect to be sure there aren’t any fasteners. If fasteners exist, unscrew the fasteners to separate the cabinets. Likewise, remove any screws that fasten the cabinet to the wall. If the cabinet is attached with glue, use a hammer to wedge the pry bar between the wall and cabinet.

After separating the cabinets from each other and the wall, carefully lift the cabinet up and away from the wall. Take your old cabinets and dispose of them in your roll-off dumpster and call us to pick them up.
